Rainbow in a Jar
Learn about liquid density by creating a stunning rainbow in a jar using just sugar, water, and food coloring. It's a sweet and colorful science lesson!
You will need:
- Water
- Sugar
- A tall, clear glass or jar
- Food coloring (at least four different colors)
- Spoons and separate cups for mixing
What you'll need to do:
Line up four cups. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the first cup, 2 to the second, 3 to the third, and 4 to the fourth. Add a different color of food coloring to each cup.
Add 3 tablespoons of warm water to each cup and stir until all the sugar has dissolved.
Carefully pour the most dense liquid (the one with 4 tbsp of sugar) into the tall jar first. Then, very slowly, pour the next liquids on top, from most dense to least dense. Pouring over the back of a spoon helps!
